Position Summary

Under supervision, Safety Specialists work with Engineers, Technicians, and other support staff to ensure proper execution of industry, local, state, and federal safety regulations, as well as ensuring compliance with site specific safety rules and policies.

  • Identifies issues and works with supervision to implement appropriate safety regulations, technical standards and instructions related to: high pressure, cryogenics, pneumatic, hydraulic and electrical systems, as well as electromechanical, mechanical and lifting environments
  • Reviews plans and specifications for operations involving the use of machinery or equipment in order to determine if all safety requirements have been met
  • Inspects facilities, machinery, and safety equipment in order to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance
  • Inspects assigned area and associated major activities, before, during and after testing and pre/post launch operations for compliance with company and customer safety requirements
  • Establishes, or recommends to management strategies, objectives, and policies to ensure compliance
  • Issues confined space permits
  • Sets up and oversees entry into clears
  • Notifies dispatch of hazardous operations taking place at the launch pad; includes starting and ending times
  • Engages and disengages warning lights when hazardous activities are occurring or substances are present in the workplace
  • Monitors delivery of hazardous chemical transition from truck to tank and ensures safety protocols are followed
  • Secures and account for employees working on the launch pad during emergencies
  • Ensure the launch pad is secured at the end of the business day
  • Works with supervision and teams to edit procedures as required

  • Must be able to comprehend SDS information.
  • Uses multi-gas meters and O2 meters.
Must possess knowledge of the following industrial site management:
  • Corrosion Control identification
  • Electrical Meter usage; Multi-meter, Voltmeter and Ohms-meter/Grounding requirements
  • Flexhose Requirements; types, ratings commodities, integrity and restraints
  • Cryogenics, handling, and safe operating techniques
  • Spill and emergency procedures
  • Use of personal protective equipment, including respiratory protective devices
  • High Pressure, safety, release effects of potential energy, proper restraint, configuration basics and applications, dangers and precautions
  • Chemical, communicate safe work practice and identifications.  Hazardous Communication (HAZCOM)
  • Ensure specific processes, procedures and certifications are present for support of hazardous operations
Must possess the following specific to launch site management:
  • Emergency Egress Procedures; Marshalling Area/Badge Board
  • Contents/Purpose/Use/Disposal of Spill Kits
  • Cryogenics, handling, and safe operating techniques
  • Understand the process for accident reporting and fires accidents, spills and emergency procedures
  • System Safing/Damage Mitigation; Fuel, Cryogenic systems, High Pressure Gas Systems, Electrical Isolation
  • Operational, Occupational/Industrial Safety
  • Overview of fall protection criteria and practice
  • Overview of Institutional Safety Inspection 1910 and 1925 standards


Bachelor’s Degree; Associate’s Degree with three years of experience or a high school diploma or GED equivalent with a minimum of 5 years of experience in aerospace or munitions testing environment a plus.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Interprets drawings, specifications, blueprints, schematics, diagrams and sketches.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have a basic or advanced knowledge of computerized equipment, basic computer skills and Microsoft applications including: internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

Certificates, Licenses, Registration

Must be able to obtain or possess the OSHA 30 Certification within 90 days of hire.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to risk of radiation and vibration.  

Work environment involves significant risks with exposure to potentially dangerous or extremely adverse conditions which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g. fieldwork on launch pads, near high pressure and cryogenic systems, near extremely energetic materials.

The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions (non-weather); working near moving mechanical parts; outdoor weather conditions; extreme cold (non-weather) and extreme heat (non-weather).
