Security Officer I
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Entry Level Position. Under direct supervision, this position is primarily responsible for enforcing/maintaining security policies and procedures relating to both personnel and property belonging to the Virginia Spaceport Authority (VSA) and the Mid -Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS). This is a uniformed position.
RESPONSIBILITES AND DUTIES:
- Secures premises and personnel by patrolling property; monitoring surveillance equipment; inspecting buildings, equipment, and access points; permitting entry
- Prevents losses and damage by reporting irregularities; informing violators of policy and procedures; restraining trespassers.
- Controls traffic by verifying credentials and directing drivers/visitors thru vehicle control facility
- Performs regular inspections of personnel and property entering and exiting VCSFA/MARS facilities
- Performs after hours (Clean Desk) inspections to assure proper disposition of company documents and critical assets
- Completes reports by recording observations, information, occurrences, and surveillance activities; interviewing witnesses; obtaining signatures
- Maintains environment by monitoring and setting building and equipment controls.
- Maintains organization’s stability and reputation by complying with legal requirements.
- Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer’s instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; evaluating new equipment and techniques.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
- Serves as backup to the Badge Office to process all accesses as required.
- Rotates between different post assignments at various VSA Facilities
- Responsible for safe-guarding classified national security assets. Serves as an Alarm Respondent for the Alarm Monitoring company for response within customer requirements during trouble calls (Live within 15 minutes of MARSCOM preferred, Maximum of one hour required)

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
General Education: High School Diploma or equivalent
Job-Related Experience: None (Entry Level)
Certifications: Must meet the qualifications to obtain a high-level government security clearance and associated polygraph. Must be able to qualify and maintain the appropriate firearms and less-lethal tactical training and certifications. DCJS Firearms and Arrest Authority
Licenses, etc.: Valid driver's license is necessary when operating a vehicle while on agency business.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands handle, or feel and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals and risk of electrical shock. The employee is frequently exposed to risk of radiation and vibration. Work environment involves significant risks with exposure to potentially dangerous or extremely adverse conditions which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g. fieldwork on launch pads, near high pressure and cryogenic systems, near extremely energetic materials. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions (non-weather);working near moving mechanical parts; outdoor weather conditions; extreme cold(non-weather) and extreme heat (non-weather). The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Must be 18 years or older
Must be able to successfully complete the yearly VSA Security physical fitness / qualification course (Obstacles, 1-mile run, simulated arrests / grappling)
Required to complete the following VA DCJS courses and maintain active certifications / firearm endorsements:
01E – Core Security Officer
05E – Arrest Authority
75E – Security Officer Handgun Training
07E – Basic Handgun Training
Less Lethal Weapons
American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED
Must be able to obtain and maintain eligibility for issuance of a NASA credential.
Must be able to pass a pre-employment background check and drug test.
