Engineering Intern

Position Summary

We are currently seeking qualified rising graduates pursuing a higher education degree program to participate in our 11-week paid internship program.

An engineering intern position that supports the technical oversight of engineered systems as assigned. Areas of support may include cryogenic, pneumatic, fuel, electrical, control, structural, HVAC, and water systems. Position requires a strong general engineering background. Work directly with customer, support contractors, and VCSFA technical staff in a team environment. Work products are produced with oversight and require review prior to presentation to levels above technical staff. Provide direction to technicians and support personnel.

Duties

• Develop with general direction and oversight system operating, testing, and maintenance procedures, engineering work packages including those for hazardous operations, system drawings, trouble-shooting plans, certification documentation, system performance metrics, and documents required by MARS operational directives
• Develop and maintain operational system parameters: commodity levels in relation to operational requirements; spares critical for flight and maintenance; sampling and system cleanliness; outage requests and tracking; system configuration control; and produce weekly status reports
• Generate system change recommendations to increase operating efficiency, performance, safety, and reliability
• Develop Material for Change Configuration Board (CCB) and Design Reviews; provide input on engineering processes; develop and maintain an in-depth technical resource on the assigned system(s); develop a practical understanding of the launch pad systems as a whole
• Monitor and perform fieldwork on the assigned system(s); coordinate with other internal groups including QA, Safety, and the Pad Manager
• Attend formal training as needed to pursue required certifications
• Ensure completion of tasks safely and efficiently within allocated budget/schedule; provide task workload estimates and required resources; provide requirements for task incorporation into workflow; comply with all Pad Management, Quality, Documentation, and Safety Policies
• Perform other duties in support of work unit as assigned

• Work is assigned by others and performed with direct oversight from experienced staff. Results are checked for accuracy through review procedures. Exercise of good judgment is desired; honesty and integrity are required
• Work duties have a high degree of variability. Requires use of several methods and procedures in combination. Must interpret guidelines, policies, and procedures to fit changing situations. Create plans, establish priorities, and allocate resources to achieve a specific objective
• Knowledge of basic engineering practices and principles. Experience with pneumatic, cryogenic, hydraulic, and other liquid, and control systems preferred

Education

• Must be currently working towards a bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field (physics, chemistry, biomechanics) from an accredited college or university
• Direct experience in aerospace or industrial organizations preferred
• Related work experience preferred; can be satisfied with student intern positions, summer job experience or college co-op programs
